Our Historic Journey
1984 — Inaugural Reston Triathlon
A Community Race is Born - The first Reston Triathlon was held, marking one of the earliest community triathlon events in the Washington region. The race featured an open-water swim, road bike segment, and run course through Reston, laying the foundation for decades of local endurance sport.
1990s–2000s — Growth and Local Tradition
Growing Participation & Community - Through the 1990s and 2000s, the triathlon became a beloved annual staple, drawing increasing participation from local and regional athletes. The race attracted repeat participants and built a tight-knit community of volunteers, competitors, and supporters.
2010s — Competitive Momentum
During this decade, the event saw strong competition and notable performances. Community coverage from the 34th and 35th annual races highlights age-group champions and overall winners, showing the depth and competitive spirit of the field.
2020–2021 — Pandemic Disruption & Organizational Change
In 2020, the Reston Triathlon canceled its event due to the global pandemic. In early 2021, the organizing board announced it could no longer sustain the race financially and logistically, risking the end of the long-running tradition.
2023 — Revival with CORE Foundation
After a three-year hiatus, the CORE Foundation stepped in to revive the Reston Triathlon as part of its Racing in Reston series. The event returned on September 10, 2023, preserving its legacy with official support, community engagement, and a new nonprofit framework.
