Attention Athletes: Reston Triathlon Transitions to Duathlon Format
Updated September 3, 2024
For the safety of our athletes, we need to convert this year’s Reston Triathlon to a duathlon format. Due to cyanobacteria (also known as blue-green algae) in Lake Audubon, the lake designated for the swim course, we cannot facilitate the original race. While this change wasn’t anticipated, we’re fully committed to turning this challenge into an opportunity. Our team is working tirelessly to create an exceptional duathlon experience that prioritizes everyone’s health and safety while offering an exciting, competitive event. This adapted format will showcase the resilience and adaptability of our athletic community. We’re excited to see you push your limits in this new challenge!
What is the status of Lake Audubon?
Reston Association (RA) has been monitoring the presence of cyanobacteria (also known as blue-green algae) in Lake Audubon. RA watershed staff, RA’s water quality contractor, and George Mason University faculty have confirmed that the cyanobacteria present are potentially harmful, having the ability to produce toxic substances. While the lake’s ecosystem is doing well, the potential exists for harmful algal toxins to impact swimmers. Dr. Rosalina Christova, Assistant Professor at GMU, identified the dominant cyano as Limnothrix, a genus that produces toxins. Also present is Dolichospermum (formerly Anabaena), which has heterocytes and may produce toxins. There was also quite a bloom of Ceratium hirundinella, a very photogenic dinoflagellate, in the plankton sample.
What happens to the swim course?
The swim course has been replaced by a 4K run, which you can find on Course Maps. The bike course will change by one mile, increasing the distance from 40k to 41k, and is now available on Course Maps.
What happens to Transition 1 (T1) and Transition 2 (T2)?
The race will now include only one transition area at South Lakes High School. The previous T2 is now the only transition area, located in the parking lot between the school, tennis courts, and track.
Does packet pickup change?
Saturday’s packet pickup will now be at South Lakes High School (NEW LOCATION) from 10 am – 3 pm. We will have course reviews at 11 am and 2 pm. Friday’s packet pickup will remain at the Lake Audubon Pool parking lot from 4-8 pm, with a course review at 6:30 pm.
What if I registered for the Familiarization Swim?
The Familiarization Open Water Swim scheduled for Saturday, September 7, has been CANCELED. For those who already signed up, please consider donating your registration. Your generosity would directly support our charitable initiatives and help ensure the sustainability of future Racing in Reston events. If you cannot donate your fee, contact Jen at jdryzga@corefoundation.org for a full refund.
What is your refund policy?
We do not have a refund or deferral policy. CORE Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, so all funds raised through our Racing in Reston events benefit our community. We appreciate your understanding. However, in this situation, our team is exploring all options to provide fair solutions, including deferrals toward future races for those who decide not to participate in the duathlon format. If you have a specific question, contact Jen at jdryzga@corefoundation.org.
We are so glad you that you’ve chosen to participate in CORE Foundation’s Racing in Reston series. Review the FAQs to answer most of your questions. If not, contact Jen at jdryzga@corefoundation.org.
What is your refund policy?
We do not have a refund or deferral policy. CORE Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, so all funds raised through our racing events are used to assist our community. If you can not participate and would like a tax deduction letter for your unused race entry, contact us at info@corefoundation.org. We appreciate your understanding.
I’m interested in becoming a sponsor. Who do I contact?
We love our sponsors! Please reach out to Megan at mmurphy@corefoundation.org and she will contact you.
I’m interested in becoming a fundraiser. Tell me more!
Make your training miles count by becoming a VIP Fundraiser! At CORE Foundation, we believe in helping others “be the change they want to see in the world.” Our fundraising program makes your training miles count while offering some great incentives to our fundraisers. As a Racing in Reston athlete, you will unite with fellow participants to raise $500 in donations earning you a free race entry or other exclusive incentives. We will provide the tools and motivation that you need including a fundraising link and optional training calls to launch your campaign. You only need to add enthusiasm and inspiration. Fundraising information for the youth events will be added soon.
What are the rules for wearing wetsuits in the Reston Triathlon?
USA Triathlon (USAT) has rules for wetsuit use in open water swimming events based on water temperature:
- 60.6 degrees Fahrenheit or lower: Wetsuits are required for all age groups
- 78 degrees Fahrenheit or lower: Wetsuits are allowed for all competitors, and everyone receives series scoring points
- 78.1-83.9 degrees Fahrenheit: Wetsuits are allowed at the competitor’s discretion, but they are ineligible for awards
- 84 degrees Fahrenheit or higher: Wetsuits are not permitted for any competitors
When is the water temperature taken at a triathlon?
The official water temperature is taken by a USAT official 60-90 minutes before the race begins.
I’ve seen other racers wear your cool tri kits. How do I purchase one?
Custom tri gear is available for purchase in the store or you may earn one for free by becoming a fundraiser. Learn more and start your campaign.
I’ve heard you have monthly Meetups. Tell me more!
Meetups for the Sprint and Olympic distance events are in-person opportunities for athletes to meet our team of Race Directors, Coaches, and other athletes. Meetups take place once a month starting in February and cover topics such as training, nutrition, and course overview. Join these monthly events to have your questions answered for race day! Sponsors and partners are encouraged to attend.
How do I register for relay, aquabike, or aquathlon?
Select the appropriate category when you register. For relay events, the Captain may register the team and add teammates at a later time.
How does a relay work?
A relay is a great option for a small group that would like to race together. Relay teams consist of 2 or 3 people covering all three events.
What if I list the wrong swim time?
You will have the option to update your swim time later.
What and when is packet pickup?
Packet pickup is an exciting event for both race participants and volunteers. We provide a designated time for athletes to pick up their race packet which includes race information, swag, and a timing chip. Packet pickup days and times vary for each event. Please see your race for details. Adult athletes must come in person with a photo ID to pick up their packet. Packet pickup is not available on race day to ensure the best experience for all athletes.
Who is USA Triathlon and why do I have to purchase a membership?
USA Triathlon (USAT) is proud to serve as the National Governing Body for triathlon events, including duathlon, aquathlon, aquabike, winter triathlon, off-road triathlon, and paratriathlon in the United States. USAT is our partner for Racing in Reston so all races are sanctioned through them. This means that all athletes must be either a USAT annual member or they must purchase a special “one-day” membership. This membership provides the event host with the necessary liability and excess medical coverage. Athletes must also abide by the rules set forth by USAT on race day.
I have a question about the course and do not see the answer.
An athlete guide will be online several weeks before race day.
What is the best way to contact you if my questions were not answered?
