RESTON TRIATHLON

Sunday, September 7, 2025

Since 1984, the Reston Triathlon has been a staple in our community. It opens with a 1500-meter open water swim in Lake Audubon, followed by a 25-mile bike ride and a 10K run on local paths. The Olympic distance event has challenged athletes from around the country and has affectionately been called the Reston Triathlon World Championship.

A Brief History

During the pandemic, the Reston Triathlon Board of Directors worked tirelessly to keep the tradition alive. Unfortunately, in 2021, they announced they could no longer financially or logically sustain the beloved race. CORE Foundation, working closely with the previous board, is thrilled to revive the event and continue the legacy. The Reston Triathlon made its comeback debut on September 10, 2023, and is held annually on the Sunday after Labor Day.

CORE Foundation is grateful for the loyal athletes and strong community. They received overwhelming support while pursuing the opportunity to restore this local event. CORE Foundation and Racing in Reston appreciate your continued support as they maintain and improve this race well into the future!

Course Maps

The swim course is in Lake Newport Pool. The distance is about ¼ mile (400 meters). Based on the expected water temperature, wetsuits are not permitted. Swimmers enter through the main entrance and go to the far side of the pool. The start is near the diving boards. Spectators are on the opposite side of the pool.

This course is a 400-meter “snake” swim. Athletes begin one at a time, swim up lane 1, under the lane divider, down lane 2, etc., until they complete all eight lanes.

The slightly rolling bike course is protected by traffic cones and Fairfax County Police. Volunteers are available to give directions and assistance.

The run course includes shaded pathways marked by traffic cones. Volunteers are available to give directions and assistance.
